The Oconee County Mentor Program is looking for volunteers. The Mentor Program provides an opportunity for adults and kids to form friendships and have fun. Mentors usually spend a lunch hour once a week with a child at their school. Places to meet include the school lunch room and media center. In order to be a mentor, a person must be at least 18 years old and out of high school. An individual must also fill out an application packet, submit a background check, and attend a training session. However, the most important qualification is a real desire to work with young people. If you would like to become a mentor, contact Patsy Grimes at 706-769-4974 or mentor@oconeeconnection.org.

Sometimes children need a little extra help. This fund was created as an emergency fund for a student that has been identified by the school counselor or school social worker in need of a helping hand. Families find themselves in difficult times and unfortunately sometimes the children suffer. This fund is a onetime donation to bridge the gap until other resources can be found. It does not exceed $100 and many times it can make all the difference in a child’s life.

The program is designed to educate parents about the health and safety risks of serving alcohol at teen parties and to increase awareness of and compliance with the State Underage Drinking Laws. In 2001, the campaign received a national award as a promising prevention program.

Since 2007 the Oconee Area Resource Council has promoted the “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” awareness campaign in Oconee County. Articles are placed in the Oconee Enterprise as well as in the Athens Banner Herald focusing on the campaign. An ad also is included in the Enterprise’s annual county distribution to 16,000 residents. Papa John’s local pizza restaurant participates by placing stickers on 500 takeout pizza boxes. An additional 500 handouts are distributed at PTO meetings and the Town Hall meeting. Billboards are placed in three Oconee County locations.
