Senior Grocery Bag Program

Oconee Area Resource Council is currently collaborating with ACTION Inc. and Hands on Georgia to support the Senior Grocery Bag Program. It is a much needed program for low income senior citizens in Oconee County. Each senior receives a box full of groceries and personal items once a month. The Council is responsible for collecting the personal items , see list below, so seniors can spend their precious dollars on food not non perishable items. At the present time there are 36 seniors that receive this assistance and there is a waiting list of 30 eligible seniors. We hope to get area businesses, churches, and organizations to sponsor the program each month. They can help with buying items for the senior’s bags, packing the grocery bags the day before, and handing them out, the next day. Currently, all the seniors pick-up the grocery bags at the Bishop Community Center. There is hope that the program can be expanded to include eligible seniors.

There are multiple ways for you to support the program. Seniors can be sponsored by individuals for $10.00 a month or $120.00 a year. Contributions to Oconee Area Resource Council are accepted. Items can be dropped off at the Oconee Area Resources Council office in Watkinsville as well as ACTION, Inc’s office in Bishop. Any and all contributions will be welcomed!
