Last year we partnered with the Oconee Friends of the Library to provide age-appropriate books to the children throughout the summer months. We will continue this partnership and distribute books again this year along with donated recipe books.
The Summer Food for Kids program runs from the end of May to the last week of July, the entire length of the summer school break. We reach out each year to community members, faith based organizations and businesses to sponsor one week. As we raise more funds we will continue to add more families to the program. This year we would like to add at least 6 more families to our program. Our goal is to make sure all of our 130 children and their younger siblings receive food during the summer months.
2015-2016 Statistics Businesses, volunteers and the Oconee Farmers Market worked together.
32 families/93 children/67 adults received weekly boxes of food.
This was a 14% increase in children served over last year.
Cooperative Extension provided recipes and instructions on care of fresh produce were included for strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, eggplant and squash.
Food boxes were delivered to homes by OCS faculty and staff. Each box was deposited in coolers provided by supporters of the SFFK program.
Children’s books, donated by Oconee County Library Friends, included in the food boxes again this summer.
