Food for Kids

About the Program

School isn’t just a place for learning… For some of our kids, it’s also the most reliable source of food in their lives. The Oconee Food for Kids program was created to help bridge and even close the hunger gap for students in Oconee County Schools (OCS), by providing a bag of nutritious kid-friendly food to children who might not otherwise have enough to eat over the weekend.

Please help us provide enough food for weekend meals and snacks for children identified as being “food insecure” by Oconee County School officials.

2020-21 Statistics

  • 160+ children (grades K-12) were sent home each Friday with a bag of healthy food.
  • 5000+ bags packed by special needs students from both Oconee County high schools during 2020-2021 school year at Oconee Area Resource Council’s job training site.
  • Dedicated groups of volunteers kept the program on track every week by delivering the bags to all 10 schools.
  • OCS teachers and staff generously supported a portion of the program through payroll deduction.
  • Thrifty shopping at multiple food stores combined with food donations kept cost of bags low.
